Rodcast 136: Resolution Solution

Sorry about the lengthiness of this one. Not only did we have a new guy, but the exhaustion from the holidays seems to have had a blathering effect rather than a shut-uppy one.

0:00 -- New guy
12:40 -- Minutes
17:44 -- Pete's card (2/6)
26:06 -- Sunday school (Lesson 45: "The Family Is Ordained of God," Lesson 46: "Zion -- The Pure in Heart")
61:13 -- Listener comments
82:34 -- Christmas (losing its religion)
91:49 -- Resolutions

One more thing about Christmas. Isn't it weird that the Church uses Christmas as a reason to NOT go to church? Don't feel pressure to be all religious at Christmastime when your own religion doesn't seem to.

Next Rodcast: Food storage maybe!

  1. Welcome, Shawn/Shaun/Sean/etc.

Kelly Clarkson's wedding dress last year was lovely, by the way. Proves modesty is possible!

    Shah-den-froyd, not shade-n-froyd, Jn.

Loved the "Simpsons" ha-ha. I use that one myself quite often. I guess I feel quite a bit of malicious joy in my life.

So...Pd and Jn...how do you feel about same-sex civil marriage? Is that or is that not something every member of society is entitled to? And I liked what Jn said about the natural man tendency thing and having to deal with going against what you feel inside. Well-put.

Marrying a couple with issues with morality or Word of Wisdom or whatever is not the same for a bishop to marry a same-sex couple. Morality or WoW problems can ben repented of and resolved. Those couples have the chance to go to the temple, and should have that aim to begin with. Same-sex couples are not on the same trajectory. Ward weddings are in support of Church principles and have an aim of eventually getting that couple to the temple, and because same-sex relationships are not supportive of Church principles nor could point the couple to the temple, bishops pretty much can't perform such marriages. They would be completely inconsistent with core principles. Bishops represent the Church. Civil authority does not, and so can be the only authority to marry a same-sex LDS couple. My bet on the first LDS bishop to agree to do a same-sex wedding is California, btw. Liberal Land USA (and that's coming from a liberal-leaner)...and I do think excommunication would happen in that case. I don't know if a bishop could marry a couple in a non-Church building, either. Might want to ask about that.

Jn's line about middle names building up Zion was great, too, and his observation that Christ's parables about payment to workers speak to our need not to worry about how much each of us get 'paid' for our efforts was also really good (he was on fire this episode). And the singing was spectacular. Duets are the way to go!

Maybe one of your New Year's resolutions should be not to do another 101 minute Rodcast. Too long.

Shawn/Sean/Shaun/etc. -- I wasn't let down. Love the voices and the snarky comments. You are off to a good start.

Without Christmas, there would have been no Easter. It's tough that Christmas isn't always a Sunday, and so quite often, Mormons don't go to church to observe the holiday, but I think that's fine. Spending the day with your family is fine with me. I figure our duty is to prevent the taking of Christ out of Christmas. I think that if you want to make a statement about how there is a need to remember Christ every day and not just at Christmas, then do that. Be the change...be the example. Don't throw the figurative baby out with the bath water. Let the world do what it will. Keep your Christmas about Christ and let others make it what they believe it should be.

My New Year's resolutions are to listen more and to trust more. Listen to others, listen to God, and through the listening, come to trust more. When one really listens, they are led to act, and when they are led to act, they are able to see positive results and that builds trust that they are on the right track and are trusted by God and others. That's what I want to work on this year. My theme scripture is 1 Nephi 7:12.

Ash Wednesday is March 5. You have two months to come up with your things to give up, so get crackin', guys.

    [End]

  2. First off, Captain Picard is not allowed to marry Data to anyone. That would be Robosexual marriage which everyone knows is wrong and ridiculous.

The length of the Rodcast is always just about right. I never get bored listening you you all.

My resolution for this year is to continue to be awesome.

  3. From the statement the Church issued today regarding the same-sex civil marriage thing in Utah:

"Consistent with our fundamental beliefs, Church officers will not employ their ecclesiastical authority to perform marriages between two people of the same sex, and the Church does not permit its meetinghouses or other properties to be used for ceremonies, receptions, or other activities associated with same-sex marriages. Nevertheless, all visitors are welcome to our chapels and premises so long as they respect our standards of conduct while there."

So yeah. Excommunication is pretty much guaranteed for any bishop who crosses the line.
