Podcast 27: Fast

More Isaiah.

Also a very quick discussion on fasting. Next week we'll probably have a fast discussion on the quickening.

  1. ONLY two weeks, Pete? In my ward, if you're the unlucky person who teaches after a month schedule finishes off, the SS prez often doesn't let you know you're teaching that Sunday until like...the Thursday before. Count your blessings.

I just saw "Chariots of Fire" for the first time last week, and yes, the Isaiah 40 verse is quoted by the "star", Eric Liddell, in the context of if we are obedient to the Commandments, He will take care of the details of our lives (bless us).

General Conference hasn't always been in April and October, btw. If I remember right, there have been June GCs...maybe under Brigham Young? Anyway, it hasn't been hard-and-fast the whole time the Church has been around...I do know that much.

I don't have any great fasting stories to tell either...probably because I'm not hardcore about it. I don't do it intently...I mention in my prayers the night before what my fasting intention will be the next day, and I mention it in my prayers the next morning too, most of the time. Otherwise, though, I don't do anything major for it. I don't ceremoniously break my fast like some people do. I don't fast for 24 hours...I do it for two meals because I'm lazy (though it is still legal, of course...I do remember that part of what the missionaries taught me). I'm probably too casual about it and that's why I haven't had a big testimony-builder in this area.

I do, though, have a considerable testimony of fast offerings. That's probably one of the most amazing parts of the Church right there.

If, for medical reasons, you need to adjust your fasting pattern or not fast at all, that is legal. Like Peter said, the Lord wants people to be healthy and safe and well and not neglect caring for their physical well-being in the name of religious observance.

You may or may not know this, but Catholics are 'required' to fast for an hour before receiving communion at Mass. Water and medicine are allowed during that time, though. I think any religion that has a fasting element HAS to make accomodation for the needs of the members.

    [End]

  2. Thanks for the invite, but I am thinking it still won't work with our church schedule - and my nap schedule (since trick or treating will be the night before will leave me all tuckered out).
