Rodcast 116: Hie to Kobol

For anybody turned off by the idea of The Iron Rodcast tackling the fictional world of Battlestar Galactica, keep in mind that we also mused about some of the concepts in Ether for like five minutes. Oh, and also we answered some viewer mail regarding Brigham Young, W.W. Phelps, David O. McKay and other things we really have no idea about.

I forgot to tie-in something regarding the Kolob talk. I meant to say that my belief in Kolob is crazy and weird enough (yet true) that I have a difficult time making fun of the wacky beliefs of other crazy beliefs such as Scientology.

Anyway, download here!

  1. As for your gassy friend in EQ, it reminds me of sitting behind an older lady in the adult session of stake conference who was doing the same thing. I figured it was the price I paid for going to the adult session of stake conference.

Regarding hymns. I'm jealous that President Faust got to recommend a hymn. I have an idea on a hymn about Polygamy that I doubt would gain much traction. Probably smart.

I remember watching the BSG movie when I was a kid. Now I want to go back and watch the series. I'm almost done with Toddlers and Tiaras and Honey Boo Boo, so maybe it's time to tackle something even more spiritual.

Looking forward to your demonic possession podcast.

Keep up the good work. I've been uplifted by what I've heard.

  2. How are you all so lucky that your church gets cancelled all the time because of weather and power outages etc?

Pete is not a horrible person for not wanting to be around the guy who farts in church. Who would? And even when Pete was tired from overwork, he still managed to bring his 'A' game to the Rodcast.

It was nice to hear that Rhett is still involved in the Rodcast. There has to be a way to get him back on some time.

It doesn't look like anybody will be beating President Mckay's 63 years as an apostle. President Monson will be an apostle in 2026. It might happen, and that would make him also the first centenarian.

I'm not sure how much I can talk about BSG without spoilers, but I love the "last supper" art they came up with for BSG. Another great spiritual point that is in the show. The "Mormon-ness" is built into the DNA of the show, hence the re-imagining maintains a Mormon "flavor." Glen Larson did a great job taking some interesting elements of the gospel and creating a compelling work of fiction. (Twilight would be a bad example) I like a some of his other shows too, like The Fall Guy, Knight Rider, and Magnum PI. The spinoff series Caprica isn't as good for some reason. It is feels like a soap opera more. It still has some great Scifi elements, but the story wanders more. For some reason it didn't gain the viewers and it ended up cancelled before the end of the first season. I'm excited to watch the new series, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Have you heard anything about that?

Anyhow, hope you all have a merry Christmas. My favorite Christmas tradition is to watch "Mr Kruegar's Christmas." Although I'm intrigued with Pete's idea of watching the complete Lord of the Rings. (Do you think you will add the Hobbit eventually?)

  3. I appreciate that Mark added my [End] to his post this time. I don't know if he's done it before, but I think it is a great thing to do, so [End] on, sir.

I took my time getting around to listening to this one because I have no real interest in BSG (and so am glad the discussion of the show is off your list now...right?). So...sorry I'm listening to it two weeks later...but I figure sometimes you guys take your time recording and posting the podcasts, so sometimes I can take my time listening to them. lol jk

Didn't know Dick Motta was LDS. Cool.

The fart story was worth the price of admission, though. Hilarious. Though, Pd, you are not a terrible person for giving up on the day after the negative experience in EQ. People deserve uplift and edification (etc.) at Sunday meetings, no weirdness and stench.

Line of the day was "Maybe with a bottom that droops down a little bit". Loved that one. Imagery.

Council of Twelve vs Quorum of Twelve: Back in the '70s, it seems like Church members used "Council" instead of "Quorum" a lot more to talk about the Apostles, if you read Conference talks or the Ensign from back then (and into the '80s...'quorum' became the word more recently). That might add to the Mormon-ness...

I did like the Olive Tree Allegory find, Jn. Nice!

I'd love to hear Alex on the podcast. That would be SO awesome. Best home teacher I may have ever had. :)
